Following his wifes suicide, Manhattan psychologist David Callaway (Robert De Niro) decides to make a new start and help his young daughter Emily (Dakota Fanning) to escape some traumatic memories by moving to rural upstate New York. However, the change in surroundings doesnt help Emily, and she becomes increasingly withdrawn. David tries to help by introducing her to a local girl her age, but Emily refuses to play with her. In fact, the only person she seems interested in is a seemingly imaginary friend named Charlie. Despite Davids best efforts, Emily refuses to disclose any information about who or what Charlie actually is. As a series of horrifying events begins to unfold, Emily places all blame firmly on Charlie, and David begins to suspect that Charlie may not be as imaginary as he first appeared
